We are excited to share news of our latest film project – Peace in Our Pockets.

In 2007, the disputed presidential election in Kenya resulted in widespread protests followed by violence throughout the country.  Inter-ethnic conflict left more than 1,000 people dead and hundreds of thousands internally displaced and homeless. Today the damage and distrust created by the 2007-2008 post-election violence has yet to be healed in many Kenyan communities.

Peace in Our Pockets tells the story of Kenyan Peacebuilders working to ensure that the 2013 national elections do not end in violence. By harnessing the power and peace potential of mobile phone technologies, they are strengthening democratic institutions and engaging citizens often neglected by politicians.

The film follows the work of Sisi ni Amani Kenya (“We Are Peace” in Swahili), a Nairobi-based NGO devoted to promoting civic engagement and preventing electoral violence.  As the country prepares for national elections in March 2013, Sisi ni Amani is working in the Baba Dogo, Korogocho, Mathare, Huruma and Kariobangi neighborhoods of Nairobi and the Narok community in the Rift Valley to prevent a repeat of the electoral violence of 2007.  The film captures the voices and work of Kenyan organizers as they use grassroots organizing strategies, cell phone messaging, and an innovative Debate Program to transform the dynamic of democratic participation in Kenya.

Peace in Our Pocekts is a film in progress to be completed following the March 2013 elections in Kenya. Kenny makes his second production trip in October/November. Support the project by visiting our film website: peaceinourpockets.com. Help us share this inspiring story.
