Alliance for Peacebuilding has published a great review of Peace in Our Pockets in Building Peace, an online “Forum for Peace and Security in the 21st Century.” We are delighted to read Alejandro Salas‘ insightful synopsis of the film and the connections he makes with his own work. As a Mexican anti-corruption activist at Transparency International, Salas understands the impact of Sisi ni Amani‘s grassroots approach and its potential for adoption by other communities. “The documentary “Peace in Our Pockets” reminds us that innovation and technology, iSMS-Nairobi-copyn the hands of committed individuals, can make a positive difference.

Salas emphasizes the importance of Sisi ni Amani’s groundwork and long-range view of democracy beyond elections. “Kenyan activists worked through leaders at the community level, building legitimacy and establishing a dialogue before using these partnerships to reach out further -through mobile phones and text messaging (SMS) – to inform and engage with their fellow citizens. In this way, “Peace in our Pockets” illustrates the progressive scale of engagement as individuals move from a state of perceived helplessness, to driving change in their own communities.” Salas’ recognizes the film’s optimism and calls for others to learn from Sisi ni Amani by watching Peace in Our Pockets. “The message is clear: whether the focus is ending corruption or preventing violence, people understand that their voices have the potential to change society.” By emphasizing the power of individuals, Salas captures the mission of the film to inspire people to create change in their own communities.
